We were so excited to finally be heading to Broome!!!!!
Street lights bent so the planes don't hit them! |
We were going to stay near cable beach but decided it was too far from town and ended up at The Roebuck Bay caravan park and we could not be happier, check out our view!
Our front yard. |
We were paying about $170 a week for this magnificent view, and even though the toilet/shower blocks were a bit old we could not complain.
Great waking up to this every day! |
There was a heap of interesting wildlife around the place. |
We spent so much time swimming in the first few days, although what time we swam depended on the tides, the water was so nice, except every now and then you could feel the sting of the sea lice, and we always kept our eyes peeled for crocs!!
Brenton's birthday came up whilst we were in Broome so we decided to go for a camel ride to celebrate!
Making friends. |
The camel ride started at 6 and went for about an hour, a perfect way to see the sun set , or the old nudists that hang around down the end of cable beach!
Can never see too many sun sets. |
Open wide! |
We had so much fun on the camel ride, they were so funny, one of them even starred in the movie Australia and was a bit of a diva!
After the camel ride we had dinner at a Thai restaurant in town, and then headed to McDonalds at Brentons request for a sundae........
Even though I had a cake at home!
I managed to pick up a few weeks work in childcare and once again Brenton was a man of leisure...
The tide heading out. |
A sea snail. |
More sunset pictures...
We were lucky enough to see dolphins one day when we were swimming but we were also unlucky another day when a croc was also in the water, the locals were all on the beach snapping like crocs so we would understand, we did and left the water very quickly!!
We also witnessed some great storms roll through.
The colour of the water is so bright here! |
A few local kids being thrown in the air. |
We did a trip to Gantheaume point in Broome to check out the old lighthouse, and look for dinosaur footprints.
We had such great weather. |
Brenton studying the map looking for the footprint directions |
The dinosour footprints here are said to be around 130 million years old and can only be seen at low tide.
Hhhmmm is this one???? |
It was like looking for a needle in a haystack, there are no actual markers just a map with a few distances on it.
That kind of looks like a print.....maybe??? |
We did give up on the prints in the end as the tide was coming in so we had a look at Anastasia's pool, a chiselled out spa that the lighthouse keeper made for his arthritic wife so she could bathe in the water every day, so romantic!
The lighthouse looking over anastasias pool. |
The colour of the rocks here were so bright and were amazing against the blue water. |
Once we wandered back at the top we found a print of what the dinosaur prints are actually meant to look like, if only we had seen this earlier, we were way too eager!!
We also went down to the wharf for a wander.
It's so long! |
We had a look for turtles and sharks but could not see anything. |
We went to the local museum just near us at roebuck bay. |
Brenton made some cute little friends on the beach.
There was always something happening down at town beach, Brenton even helped a kite surfer retrieve his kite.
Almost... |
Now what to do?? |
The first day we headed to cable beach it was closed because of the crocs, we even watched as they tried to (unsuccessfully) to catch him.
After a couple of days the beach was re-opened and were free to swim (at our own risk!).
White sand and plenty of blue water. |
Happy to be a beach bum!! |
After a day of swimming we decided to go to the open air sun pictures to see a movie that was filmed in broome and that I worked on called Bran Nue Dae. It's the world's oldest operating open air cinema, it has not been renovated too much so it still has it's old world charm, like stepping back in time.
The planes also fly right over head and look as though they might land on you!
There is still popcorn!! |
The seats are comfier that they look. |
Another storm rolling in. |
We were meant to see the staircase to the moon whilst we were in Broome but the one night it was on it was too cloudy to see it, we enjoyed the little night market they put on to celebrate it though!
We also had a surprise visitor, Lorraine came to stay with us, we were trying to keep it a secret from Brenton but I may have checked what time her flight was coming in and may have left the site up when I went to pick her up, so he was not as surprised as he should have been, still very happy though.
The first hotel Lorraine stayed in, the Mercure with a pool access room. |
Lorraine enjoying the water at Roebuck bay. |
I worked a fair bit when Lorraine came to visit but Brenton showed her the sights, including cable beach and Gantheaume point.
Lorraines 2nd hotel was Moonlight Bay, nice and spacious with a HUGE pool that we made the most of.
We dragged Brenton along to yet another market.
Then we had a look around town.
The original Broome lock up. |
A nice walk back to Lorraines hotel. |
We told Lorraine she had to have a camel ride while she is here so we took along chairs and a few beers and decided to wait for her and watch the sunset on cable beach.
Lorraine meeting her camel. |
It even sang for her! |
The fun part getting up! |
Another great night for a camel ride! |
This camel loved to pout! |
Off they went into the sunset. |
Ginger beer, not the hard stuff! |
We had a great time playing around with our camera and the sunset.
Looking back onto cable beach. |
Bretons work. |
White men can jump. |
'Oh what a feeling' |
The beach is so big that even though there are a heap of people around you still feel like you have your own private area. |
Lorraine loved her camel ride. |
Time to go. |
The camel ride was run by the ships of the desert, they were so lovely and informative, they even walk up and down telling you about each camel and all their different personalities.
After the camel ride we went and had a nice dinner at Matso's brewery, we had some very nice alcoholic ginger beer and Lorraine enjoyed a mango beer.
Salt and pepper calamari and a tomato salad, so yum! |
The nest day we were up early and hired a car to head out to Willie creek pearl farm.
The road goes from red...... |
To white.... |
Willie creek is about 40 kms from town and they suggest you do have a 4wd to get there.
There was a bit of confusion about the way we were meant to go and we turned off the path and almost got bogged! Thank god Brenton being the 4WD expert got us out just in time, the ground was like glue and we were sliding everywhere, just what you want in a hired car......we had the giggles for about half an hour after that.
The guard croc. |
The cleaning crab that lives inside the oyster shell. |
We sat and listened to a brief history on pearling and were given a look at all types of pearls and oysters, then it was off on a little boat trip to have a look around.
Showing us how the oysters are cleaned. |
The water was a little rough the day we went and the tide was in. |
The part Lorraine and I enjoyed most! |
You could do helicopter tours around willie creek or even get a lift back to town. |
We caught up with a couple of our neighbours the day before Lorraine left for a few beers at Matso's.
It was great to catch up with Lorraine and I think she had a good time relaxing in Broome too.
We would have stayed in Broome longer but Brenton struggled to find work so I said good-bye to my childcare job and we headed towards Port Hedland.
