Our next stop was Cooktown, 350 kms north of Cairns on the inland road, it's not a bad drive with plenty to see along the way, including plenty of wetland:
And after a drive through the hills, stunning lookouts:
We could not believe the wind in Cooktown when we arrived, we found a small caravan park right on the edge of town (town is very small) called the Orchid caravan park.
We decided to stay and look around for a day or two before saying goodbye to the caravan and heading off to Cape York. Our first stop was the Cooktown botanic gardens, still a windy day but the trees blocked most of it which was nice.
It was a very humid day for trekking through the gardens and obviously a good thing for the butterflies, at one stage it was like being in the butterfly enclosure at zoo.
After a walk through the mud and the trees it brings you out onto the beach:
Finch Bay |
It was so windy the sand was stinging our legs as it blew past!
Brenton taking refuge on a boulder! |
Maybe things were not a great idea.. |
The Orchid caravan park |
Tiny, and a bit run down but very close to town. |
Cooktown is famous for being the place where captain cook had to stop after his ship, 'the endeavour' hit the reef and needed repairs, so it was here the ship stayed for 7 weeks whilst it was mended.
There is a lookout with a tiny lighthouse that offers 360 degree views of Cooktown.
Sunny one side, cloudy the other. |
The river where the Endeavour undertook repairs for 7 weeks |
Cooktown |
One of the many historic buildings in town. |
There are also plenty of photo opportunities along the water just on the edge of town.
The musical ship. |
Croc watch |
Never get sick of seeing this sign. |
After two hot, windy, sometimes wet days we decided it was time to head north to Cape York.
We left our Caravan with a local 'Chris Hicks' who charges $50 a week for storage, vans, trailers, boats or trucks and it's kept in his work yard which is fenced off and locked. His number is 0417 962 581 and the address is : 1 ferrari St, Cooktown.
Cape York here we come!
