Adelaide & Victor Harbor

After our adventures in the finders ranges it was back to Adelaide to check out the city that we only passed through 8 months ago.

We stayed at the Adelaide beachfront caravan and holiday park part of the discovery parks group, it's around 16kms from the city centre and has a 4 star rating, it's also not too pricey considering it's so close to town, but beware there are heaps of rabbits running around!

We were lucky to have really great weather once again, perfect for wandering the city of Adelaide.

Stop looking at me swan!

There is also a free bus that does a loop of town, we jumped in did a loop and then decided where we wanted to get off.

We also spent a day at Glenelg, it reminded us a little bit of St Kilda.

We didn't need to go to the Adelaide hills as we had stopped there on the way through (and loved it!) so after a few more days roaming Adelaide and getting some odd jobs done it was off to Victor Harbor.

Victor Harbor is so picturesque, especially on a nice sunny day!
It was a bit of a pain to drive here from Adelaide though, not many signs and certain expressways are closed at different times of the day, so I have a feeling we took the long way round!

We stayed at the Victor Harbor Beachfront caravan park, with views of encounter bay and only a short walk into town it was the perfect choice, a really tidy park too with friendly staff.

Out the front of our caravan park.
We settled in rather quickly and headed over to Granite island a short walk across the causeway or you can get the horse drawn tram which has been going since 1894, they run 7 days a week, leaving every 20 minutes.

We chose to walk as it's really not too far.

'Granite Island granite
Granite Island was once connected to the mainland. It has survived the force of the ocean while the land that once surrounded it eroded away. The granite that makes up the Island was formed about 10 km below the surface of the earth.

Extreme pressure in the earth's crust folded layers of sediment. At the same time, extreme heat melted the base rock. The molten rock was forced upwards into weak points in the earth's crust - Granite Island was located at one of these weak points. The molten rock cooled and hardened into granite. This happened about 480 million years ago. Over millions of years, the thick layers of sediment that covered the granite were gradually eroded away by water, exposing the granite beneath'.

The views from granite island are amazing!

It's only a short walk but it's nice to have a rest and take in the views!

Granite Island is home to penguins as well, we didn't spot any on this hot sunny day, but you can come back at night and do tours or they have a little penguin showing near the kiosk in the morning and afternoon.

You can fish on the island as well, there is a pier that is popular with the locals,

A whale tale in town.

The historic ocean street as it was in  late 1890.

Ocean street today.
We also headed out to the bluff to look for some squid, there is only a very small pier and there were already a few people here so we had to 'squid' off the rocks, we were not very successful but the guys on the pier seemed to be doing well.

There are trails to the top of the bluff with great views a plenty, there is also a bike path that leads from our caravan park to the bottom of the bluff.

We decided not to go to Kangaroo Island but did head out to where the ferry's depart to have a look.

It is a steep drive there at times.

A fire in the distance.

Plenty of log trucks to get stuck behind,

Although a very windy day we had lunch at the pier at Cape Jervis and watched the ferry's come and go.

Then we headed into the national park on the way back and found a little gem.

Very steep drive down, 4wd only.

The beach we found hidden away.

Still trying for that squid!

The water here is a lot fresher than we are used to.

The steep meter as I call it.

We had  a great few days in Victor Harbor such a great little place with plenty to do and it's all so close!

The weather was also on our side, until the day we decided to leave of course, then it rained non stop and we knew we were getting closer to home!
